Sharp blades prevent blades of grass from tearing when cut. Tearing can lead to stunted growth, disease, and a long list of aesthetic defects, like a bleached or white look in certain sections of the lawn. However, dull blades aren’t the only thing that can cause this. Bent mower decks or warped blades can also damage the turf and leave a "stepped" look across the lawn when one blade cuts lower than the others.

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to this question; it is very yard-dependent. Larger, acre-sized properties in our region with little sun cover do very well at 4” to 4.25”. Any longer and the grass tends to lean over; any shorter and it burns really badly mid-summer. However, smaller properties with shade, irrigation, good soil, and healthy grass do best at 3.0” to 3.5”.
